THE WATER FESTIVAL
The Myanmar are well-knows for their fondness of fun and festivities.In olden days, a major festival was held in every month of the year.Even today, several seasonal or pagoda festivals are held at various times of the year.Among them,Thingyan of the water Festival is the merriest.
It is the Myanmar New Year Festival.It usually lasts for three or four days.People throw water at one another during the festival for the relief of the intense heat.Water-throwing also symbolizes the washing away of the sins and impurities of the old year.
People welcome the new year by doing good deeds.Old people spend their time observing Sabbath,listening to sermons,sitting in meditation and telling rosary.Some young men don the yellow robe temporarily.Some wash the images of the Buddha with perfumed water.Yong women wash the hair of old women.Mok-lone-yay-paw(jaggery-centred dough-balls that float on water)is communally made and fed to the passers-by.It if also distributed in the neighbourhood.
Thingyan is a season of goodwill and good deeds.There is fun everywhere.The air is filled with songs,music and the happy shouts of the revellers.
It is also impregnated with the scent of padauk, the flower that blooms only three times in a year.Old people gain merit performing good deeds.Young people have a wonderful time throwing water, singing, dancing, shouting thangyats and teasing one another to their hearts' content.Hence every-one looks forward to this festival every year.
